St Patrick’s Day in New York is a celebration for many reasons! From its beautiful traditions like attending céilithe, to partaking in parades, and wearing green shamrock. The holiday has become a global celebration of Irish culture. Whereas in Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day marks the arrival of Christianity. Here in New York, we celebrate with beer, scotch, and whiskey.
At Black Barn, our Beverage Director, Jay Akin, has curated a special selection of flights that hit all 3 regions at $20 each — America, Ireland, and Scotland.
“My family has been here for so long that there is little Irish heritage left, but we are originally from the English Isles. As an ode to that I bring you some Scottish, some Irish, some American. That’s me.”
— Jay Akin
Here’s the breakdown of our flights ↓
1512 Poitin – Poitin is a potato whiskey and originally made in Ireland. This one is American brought to us by Irish Distillers.
West of Kentucky Bourbon, Sonoma County Distillery – Bourbon from the west coast with a nice salinity.
Balcones, Texas Single Malt – A smooth caramel, malt from Texas.
There are 3 distinct styles of copper pot stilled 12yr Irish Whiskey. The Whiskey Exchange explains ↓
“Single (or pure) pot still is the only style of whiskey that is exclusively made in Ireland. Where single malt is produced from 100% malted barley, pure pot still whiskey uses a mix of malted and unmalted barley. This mixed mashbill gives the whisky a distinctive spiciness known as ‘pot still character’.”
What you’ll find on your flight from us ↓
Tullamore Dew 12yr
Yellow Spot 12yr
Mortlach – A bronze/orange type color. Hearty but sweetish first, with aromas of grain and BBQ that evolve into deeper scent of new leather, cocoa bean, and Spanish onion. The taste is vibrant, off-dry, intensely malty, waxy, clean, and robust. Concludes concentrated, grainy, sweeter than mid-palate. Delicious and opulent.
Auchentoshan 12yr – This one is triple distilled then matured for over twelve years. Our Lowland Single Malt Whisky has the tempting aroma of toasted almonds, caramelized toffee, and the signature smooth, delicate, Auchentoshan taste.
Laphroaig 10yr – Those enjoying the 10 Year Old will first notice the bold, smoky taste, followed by a hint of seaweed and a surprising sweetness. This full-bodied variant is the foundation of all Laphroaig expressions and comes with a long finish.
