The NoMad District is New York City’s quintessential neighborhood. The streets are steeped in history and lined with handsome buildings, world-class hotels, wonderful restaurants, exciting nightlife, and unique retail shops. When it came to opening up his own restaurant, Black Barn, it was important to John Doherty to find a neighborhood he felt proud to represent. For John, being part of the Nomad Alliance means:
“Being on the Board gives me the opportunity to make NoMad an even better place than it is to work, live, and visit.”
Where is Nomad?
Centrally located in Manhattan with easy access to the entire city, NoMad is the current hub of New York’s creative and tech industries and buzzes with a unique energy day and night. The New York Times coined the District’s name in 1999, shortly after New York City formally established the Madison Square Park North Historic District, which lies in the center of No (North) Mad (Madison Square).
On Monday, October 2, business leaders and luminaries from the NoMad District and beyond gathered at the Gansevoort Park Hotel to celebrate the progress of NoMad and to help raise funds for expanding the work of the NoMad Alliance. Guests enjoyed the best NoMad has to offer — delicious food, fabulous music and a terrific group of the energetic, creative and fun people that personify the neighborhood.
The evening spotlighted the sounds and tastes of NoMad. Grammy award-winning Jazz musician Frank Catalano lead the entertainment. The saxophonist, heralded by Downbeat Magazine for supplying “John Coltrane energy for the 21st Century,” delivered two dynamic sets that captivated the audience.
With NoMad’s legacy of Tin Pan Alley and The Jazz Loft at 821 Sixth (a legendary after-hours hangout for musicians like Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, and Charles Mingus) it was only appropriate that Jazz music would be a focus for the celebration. In addition to Frank Catalano, jazz musicians Camila Meza and Noam Wiesenberg, curated by The Jazz Gallery (one of the sponsors for This Is NoMad), also kept the beautiful sounds flowing through the night.
